Random Thoughts of the Day (10/18/10)

Busy day today. I really didn’t do that much, but it still feels like I did. Started out my day by changing the oil on the Audi, which is always a fun adventure (can you say tight spaces). I’ve had this annoying spider the past week take residence in the Porsche, so I decided to take some time today to get rid of it. I vacuumed the entire cabin and gave everything a once over. Washed the outside while I was at it, taking a clay bar to the dirtier parts. Looks like new, and hopefully the rain will hold off long enough for me to enjoy it a little.

Boredom has taken the better of me and I decided a job may be the only cure. I finished up my resume today and sent it off to a few places. Hopefully I can get some interesting research work for the next couple of months to keep me busy with.

Random Thoughts of the Day (10/13/10)

Just finished driving 1276 miles over the weekend. I’m tired. Not physically tired though, just mentally, meaning I’m unlikely to get a good nights sleep tonight. Balls. I have a few things to do tomorrow depending on how motivated I am when I wake up (if I wake up). Perhaps taking pictures for a friends portfolio? We’ll see how that goes.

Got a bottle of apple cider from Marino farm today (which says how badly I wanted some to go out driving some more) and I have to say, after drinking the stuff from Russell’s, I’m kind of disappointed. Tastes way too watered down. I think I may need to go up make another cider / doughnut purchase (yet more driving).

In other news: damn you Netflix. I signed up a while ago to be able to watch movies streaming to my computer. I don’t even have a DVD drive on my laptop, and even if I did, there’s no way for me to know what movie I’ll be in the mood for in a few days. Every time I type in a movie I want to watch, not available for streaming. Even the ones that are get randomly taken down with no warning or reason. Unless they start adding some new content, and fast, it’s not going to be worth what I’m paying.

Random Thoughts of the Day (10/06/10)

Stayed home all day. Watched some movies, did some reviews on Yelp, and was just generally lazy. I had some plans to venture off into the world today and get some errands done, but alas, the torrential rain made me think twice.

I’ve really been writing a ton of reviews lately, hoping to get Elite status over at Yelp. You get a bunch of cool things like invites to free private parties at all kinds of restaurants, some decent merchandise, and just overall coolness. Applied last week, still waiting to hear back (can take a while from what I’ve heard).

Tomorrow is supposed to be substantially better (weather wise) meaning I may be able to finally see the world (I kind of forget what sun looks like). Maybe go see if I can find the Dale sweater I’m interested in or get a replacement case for my sunglasses (it’s gotten all chewed up from banging around the car).

Random Thoughts of the Day (10/05/10)

Haven’t updated in a while, apologies for that. Past couple of weeks have been somewhat hectic, few personal matters to tend to, getting caught up in some work, and just running errands I’ve been meaning to.

I’ll be spending this coming long weekend in upstate NY with the significant other. Her family is taking a trip to visit some relatives and was kind enough to invite me along for the ride. It’s about 500 miles each way (~8 hours), and right on the cost of the state. Expect some pictures and reviews upon my return.

Got new glasses and I’m pretty excited about them. I’ve actually had the frames for a while, but never the correct prescription in them. Got around to getting them filled correctly (after a few tries) and I’ve really taken a liking to them. While I was waiting around to pick them up, I actually stumbled upon a nice pair of Ray Bans I may pick up. They’re a bit odd considering my normal taste, but I like them just the same. We’ll see if I can go back and try them on again with someone else present to get an opinion.

I’ve also always wanted a red Dale of Norway sweater (can you sense a theme here?) and think this my finally be the year I pick one up. The one I’m interested in is the 125th Anniversary edition. They stopped making them some time ago, but you can still find theme here and there. I found a few places that sell them and plan on trying one on for size. They always look great on the models, but never quite the same in person. I’m guessing a medium or small for the body size, but an x-large for the arm length. Woe is me.

I’ll be updating more regularly as things calm down a bit, so expect more news and posts to come.

Update: D3 LCD Fog Repair

See original post here. I was woken up early this morning to banging on the door. Not expecting anyone I jumped out of bed, still in my pajamas, and peered through the window. To my surprise, a nice UPS man was at the door holding a rather large box, which I would soon find out was from Nikon.

I received an estimate last Thursday (today is now Wednesday) from Nikon. They said the camera would require a Rank A repair, costing me a total of $125 and change. It didn’t give me an estimated completion date or exactly what the cause of the problem was, just that I needed to pay it to get my work done. I did by credit card that afternoon and have been waiting until just a few hours ago.

Camera looks perfect. Looking over the repair summary, it appears that they replaced the rear LCD glass, a couple of sponges (not sure what / why), as well as performed a full clean and check. Camera looks and works like new, and I’m happy to have it back.

Random Thoughts of the Day (09/21/10)

Not a very eventful day today. Managed to get around to having the Porsche inspected. I was a bit worried about this, as in Massachusetts, you’re required to have a front plate and an essentially stock car. I had neither. I had also removed the previousinspection sticker to make sure there was no residual residue when the new one was applied, which the inspection stations usually don’t care too much about (they would it it was their own car). Stopped by the dealer to ask where they bring their cars for stickers and was pleasantly surprised they do them right there. Had to wait about 20 minutes for someone to get back from lunch, and about another 10 to get the actual inspection done. I had forgotten my registration (need to remember to slip that back into the car) but that wasn’t too big of an issue.

Tomorrow is going to be one of those stay in and get work done kind of days (hopefully). There are a few phone calls and things I need to catch up on that I can hopefully get taken care of.

iPhone 4 Background / Wallpapers

Nothing like some nice new wallpapers to brighten up your day. I recently updated the wallpapers of my iPhone 4 to take advantage of the fancy “retina” display. Found one wallpaper for the home screen that looks like it was created from the iPhone technical papers. It needed some work (adjusting page box size, colors, etc) but I think it looks pretty good. As for the lock screen, the pattern of the wood flooring gives a nice look, and allows for customization (adding name and address incase lose phone).

D3 LCD Fog: Visit to Nikon Service Center

A very sad day in my book. Today marked the first time I have ever sent a body into Nikon for repair work after just under a decade of pro body use. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed a bit of fog behind the rear LCD which did not dissipate despite allowing the camera to air for an extended period. I called up Nikon USA and explained the problem to them, and they told me to pack it up and ship it in for  what would most likely be a ~$50 cleaning. I filled out a short form online, removed all the batteries, cards, straps, and other accessories, and starting looking for a box. An hour of bubble wrapping, $35 in shipping fees, and a short drive to the post office later, I am now without a camera for at least a week. Although I don’t necessarily use it each and every day, there’s something disheartening about knowing that should I need to, I would be unable to grab it and go snap some frames off. We’ll see exactly how long and how much it takes to get it back to me in perfect condition.
