Photo of the Day (10/04/11): Blue Jelly

Blue Jelly

For those who have never been, I have to say, the New England Aquarium is actually quite a bit of fun. I purchased a Groupon for two and went with the significant other this past Saturday. It took about 40 minutes of waiting before we could get in, but once we did, the place wasn’t terribly packed. They had a number of  great exhibits, an acceptable little cafe upstairs, and some great photo-ops. I elected against bringing my camera that day, since I just wanted to enjoy the visit rather than be working the entire time, but couldn’t pass this shot up. Downstairs was the jellyfish room, with each tank lit up dimly in a different color. This particular tank, with the blue lighting, wasn’t very cluttered, so I snapped a frame with my iPhone. Did a little minor editing in Photoshop to bring up the contrast and expand the canvas a bit, and vola.

Photo Of The Day (06/21/11): Provincetown, MA

I went down the Provincetown with my girlfriend some time ago, spending the weekend at a fantastic little bed and breakfast. We visited a lot of the shops in town, and took our time driving up and down the cape, stopping at several lighthouses and stores. The weather was a bit cool, as it was still early in the season, but it was a great time none the less.

As life gets increasingly busy, I find myself thinking about it getting away again more and more. Sometimes a couple of days away from the hectic bustle of life can make a huge difference, and I think it’s what I need right about now. The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) at Lime Rock Park is coming up soon, and I may take the chance to catch a few days of rest and relaxation, hopefully catching a great race in the process.

Photo of the Day (11/16/10): Restorations

As part of a surprise 50th anniversary party for my grandparents this coming weekend, I’m taking a number of old photos of theirs and restoring / digitizing them. Most of them are pretty worn and damaged, so I’m going through, correcting the problems, and cleaning things up. I have a few hundred pictures to scan and edit before the week is up, so I’m trying my best to manage my time with each. Above is a great one I found of my great-great-grandparents from early 19th century. Love the clothing and rigid formality of pictures from back then.

Photo of the Day (10/30/10): Fire Works

Technically not the best picture I’ve ever taken, but probably one of my favorite. Over the significant other’s house taking advantage of some recently purchased fireworks (roman candles). Took my best guess at exposure, lit the area up with a flashlight to lock in focus, and snapped a bunch of pictures (12fps ftw). Increased the exposure a bit (in shadows) and straightened out things a little. All in all, a nice shot in my opinion.

Photo of the Day (10/28/10)

Continuing on the automotive theme, I decided to try out a taillight shot as well. For this, I pulled the car in straight (worlds easier than trying to back it in), with the rear just barely out the garage door. I found a small piece of 2×4 and propped it between the seat and the brake pedal, pushing the seat just forward enough to get the lights to activate. Got out the fog machine, turned it on, and snapped a few shots. Got about 75 in all, most with varying amounts of smoke, angles, and exposures. Liked this one the best.

Photo of the Day (10/26/10): Garaged Porsche

These two were taken today at around 5PM. I waited until the light was just bright enough to illuminate the exterior, but not enough so to light the interior. I backed in the Porsche (which is harder than it sounds given the edge of the garage and clutter inside), turned the high beams and running lights on, and snapped a few. Did some minor burning of the garage and dodging of the emblem, but nothing too major. Leaves were added to the floor inside to give a little color. All in all, I’m happy with both. I’d like to try again soon with the taillights instead, when I have someone available to press the pedal to turn them on.
